<p>This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) practices in Mental Health (MH) Service to provide a full range of services emphasizing quality, timeliness, and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs (VA) mission. The PMHNP provides advanced clinical practice, consultation, and management. Core functions are outlined in the clinical privileges that correspond with this position. The PMHNP has prescriptive authority as indicated by their position. In addition to patient care, the SNP may have responsibilities in other areas, such as administration, education and research. Other responsibilities include liaison with other staff in the psychiatry service and other clinical services within the STVHCS that provide support to the MHOS. Uses advanced clinical judgment to independently provide evidence-based treatment to Veterans with acute or chronic mental illness including use of psychotropic medications, psychotherapy, and other modalities. Provides patient and family education on medical/MH conditions, preventive measures, and prescribed treatments. Demonstrates leadership and engages in collaboration with other MH and specialty care professionals while involving Veterans and their families (as appropriate), in treatment plan development. Counsels and treats patients with substance use disorders. Initiates referrals and consults to specialty services. Assists the Chief of Psychiatry Service with the supervision of staff Nurse Practitioners. The PMHNP Residency Training Director provides leadership, oversight, and quality assurance for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Residency Program. Leads program administration and direction, ensuring alignment with mission, goals, and accreditation standards. Ensures compliance with Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA) requirements and all regulatory/accreditation standards. Develops and maintains the residency curriculum, including didactics, seminars, clinical rotations, and competency tracking. Guides psychiatric/mental health didactic content and evaluates instructional quality. Oversees recruitment and selection of qualified PMHNP residents. Supports and guides faculty and preceptors across training sites to ensure consistent resident experience. Collaborates with clinical and administrative teams to maintain high-quality learning environments. Leads accreditation activities, documentation, and continuous quality improvement. Ensures adherence to organizational, regulatory, and educational standards. Provides advanced psychiatric clinical guidance to residents and staff. Maintaining VA training requirements, timely completion of documentation and upkeep of credentials required for privileging and re-privileging. Includes indirect patient care; accurate and timely open encounter & open consult management, adheres to CPRS documentation rules and requirements and to clinic procedures for patient scheduling & access; oversight of relevant performance measures; and participates in the development of the new focus on the Patient Centric Care, Utilization Management, and Patient Safety initiatives, and process improvements (system redesign). Expected to remain privileged and practicing in psychiatry/mental health. Responsible for providing primary, secondary, and tertiary care in both hospitalized and outpatient settings, identifying the patient's mental and medical health problems and designing diagnostic and therapeutic plans to meet these needs. As required, the NP will provide consultations throughout the medical center; and tele-mental health assessments and treatment. The NP may be required to work in an extended hour's clinic along with a compressed schedule. When required, cover other duties as assigned to include holidays, weekends, evenings and on-call coverage. The care provided is to comply with clinical practice guidelines as measured by the External Peer Review Program and the Clinical Reminder reports.
