<p>This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>This is an OPEN CONTINOUS ANNOUNCMENT and will remain open until August 3rd, 2026. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be June10th, 2026, with subsequent cut-off dates every 2 weeks. Matsunaga VA Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Staff Pulmonologist provides direct outpatient clinical care for Veterans with respiratory diseases and conditions affecting the lungs and airways with focus on diagnosis and treatment within the VAPIHCS outpatient clinics through face-to-face visits as well as virtual visits. In addition to observance of Federal national and local regulatory, policy, and accreditation requirements governing this Health Care System, this position encompasses the following examples of responsibilities overseen by a Pulmonologist. Clinical The clinical duties of this position include serving as an attending pulmonologist, performing outpatient consultations and follow up clinics, interpreting results of common pulmonary and sleep tests. Works collaboratively with other specialists, such as cardiologists, surgeons, and respiratory therapists, to provide comprehensive care. The position also includes providing medical oversight to respiratory therapy clinics, such as home oxygen clinics and CPAP follow up clinics. Will be required to travel to the VA clinics and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) within VAPIHCS. Schedule will be based on identified Veteran needs. Locations may include but not limited to Maui, Kauai, Hilo, Kona, Guam, Windward, and American Samoa. Academic/Teaching/Training May include education of medical students and residents and/or clinical supervision of other providers. Other duties as assigned by the Pulmonary Section Chief and/or ACOS SC and/or Chief of Staff. Supervisory Controls: The position reports directly to the Pulmonary Section Chief and is accountable to the Associate Chief of Staff of Specialty Care. Age, Development, and Cultural Needs of Patients Requirements: The primary age of Veterans treated is in their middle years (ages 40 to 50) or at the geriatric level (ages 60 or older). There are occasionally younger patients between the ages of 25 to 40 years of age who require care. The position requires the incumbent to possess or develop an understanding of the needs of these types of patients. Sensitivity to the special needs of all patients in respect to age, developmental requirements, and culturally related factors must be consistently achieved. Computer Security Requirement: The incumbent protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, Federal regulations, VA statues and policy, and VHA policy. The incumbent protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion. Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc., as set out in the computer access agreement that the incumbent signs. Reports all known information security incidents or violations to the supervisor and/or the Information Security Officer immediately. Reports all known privacy incidents or violations to the Privacy officer immediately. Compliance is measured by supervisory observation and periodic random monitoring by the Information Security Officer or Office of Information Technology staff. Major violations such as loss of or unauthorized release, alteration, or deletion of sensitive data are unacceptable</p><h3>Requirements</h3>U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Must be proficient in written and spoken English. Must pass pre-employment physical examination. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). Complete all application requirements detailed in the "Required Documents" section of this announcement.<h3>Education</h3>Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated. NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
