<p>This position is located in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System- Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center in Aurora, Co. The Medical Technician performs a wide range of functions which includes compliance with CLIA regulations for laboratory testing, clerical and health tech functions under the direction of the Accessions/Phlebotomy Supervisor.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>*THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION* This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-06. At the GS-05 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-06. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher-level work, and availability of funds. Major duties and responsibilities will include: Receiving patients for medical laboratory testing collecting specimens and evaluating tests for processing determination Working in close cooperation with LIP Providers/ Medical Officer of the Medical Center in ensuring effective medical treatment is provided to eligible veterans Making adjustments to equipment of laboratory testing, setting up all necessary accessories and supplies regarding laboratory testing which assist with minor surgical procedures Ensuring that they meet the certification requirements for the the College of American Pathology (CAP) Point of Care CLIA testing Performing patients care procedures such as collection of lab specimens Ensuring all data entered into our automated data processing (ADP) system is accurate and ensures ADP security for own computer/computer system access Providing training to Medical Laboratory Technicians, Medical Technologists and Medical Technology students for phlebotomy skills Preparing specimens to be sent to outside laboratories, including reference and sharing laboratories, for testing not done at this Medical Center Answering telephone calls, and coordinates information and actions relating to patient care and services Assisting patients, visitors, and other requesting information, guidance or referral for special assistance Working closely with medical staff and patients to ensure the Coumadin monitoring and test are completed in a timely manner and follow up is ensured with lab monitoring after dose is adjusted by provider Using the hospital computer system when processing specimens Receiving, validating, processing and distributing specimens to the proper laboratory section for testing Receiving and accessioning specimens from Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center inpatients, outpatients Preparing specimens to be sent to outside laboratories, including reference and sharing laboratories, for testing not done at this Medical Center Maintaining a clean work environment including defrosting and cleaning freezers and refrigerators, cleaning the biological hood, emptying biohazard trash, and cleaning bench tops and centrifuges daily Obtaining, maintaining, cleaning and storing all laboratory medical equipment according to established policies and procedures Maintaining adequate quota of sterile and non-sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment and checks for outdated supplies/items Monitoring the humidity and temperature charts for SPD which is a critical life safety issue Setting up all necessary accessories or supplies and advises other medical personnel of new equipment, accessories or supplies for laboratory testing and specialized dermatological procedures Organizing work so that efficiency is paramount and work area is neat, tidy and meeting all regulatory requirements for sanitization required for laboratory certification Performing related medical administrative duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; Full - Time, 9:00am - 5:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not approved DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
