ABOUT THIS ROLE
<p>The Nurse Registered Nurse (RN) Same day procedures executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex patient care. The Nurse registered nurse demonstrates performance and leadership that is broad enough to improve the care for a group of patients. The Nurse is responsible for the documented outcomes at the program or service level.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>Program or service level outcomes must be broad and complex and can be demonstrated at any organizational level within a facility, Veterans Integrated Systems Network (VISN), or Veterans Affairs Central Office (VACO). Program is defined as a substantial coordinated group of activities impacting patients and/or employees. The Same Day Procedure (SDP) Registered Nurse (RN) provides specialized care in the assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluation of care for a variety of patients to include, but not limited to, adults undergoing outpatient procedures, outpatient infusions of GI lmmunotherapy drugs, transfusion of blood products, and pain procedures. The SDP RN provides pre-procedural care, including, but not limited to, the nursing assessment of patients, Informed Consent and H&P validation, the starting of intravenous fluids including venipuncture, assuring all lab work and other pre-procedural testing is completed and communicated to team members, and the administration of medications as ordered. Provides clear and concise preprocedural teaching and reviews discharge instructions to patients and families with written and verbal communication. The SOP RN provides post-procedural care, including, but not limited to, monitoring for complications from the procedure, monitoring for residual side effects of anesthesia (Phase 2) or sedation medications, providing discharge instructions, and preparing patients for home or admission. The SDP RN provides care for patients receiving Gastrointestinal (GI) Infusions requiring them to complete the ONS Chemotherapy lmmunotherapy Certification course. They provide a safe working environment while administering, handling, and disposing of biologic drugs and medical waste. The SDP RN manages monitoring requirements for specific drugs, handling immediate infusion reactions, and preventing and managing adverse events. Evaluates outcomes of evidence-based decisions and practice changes for individuals, groups, and populations. Responsible for the documented outcomes at the program or service level. Ensures that the patients are scheduled appropriate for reoccurring infusions. The SDP RN provides pre- and post-procedural care in the pain procedure area, including (but not limited to) the nursing assessment of patients, consent, and history and physical validations, the starting of intravenous fluids including venipuncture if required, and the administration of medications as ordered. The SDP RN provides postprocedural care, including (but not limited to) monitoring for complications from the procedure, monitoring for residual side effects of anesthesia or sedation medications, providing discharge instructions, and preparing patients for home or admission. The SDP RN may be required to assist in the pain procedure room, after being crossed trained and completing the appropriate competencies. This would include but not be limited to positioning the patient, participating in the time out process, ensuring appropriate site marking, and prepping the skin. The SDP RN is responsible for ensuring comprehensive documentation of all phases of care and is timely, complete, and accurate in the electronic health record.
