ABOUT THIS ROLE
<p>The Northport VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for a full-time Registered Nurse for Medical Surgical (Unit 34) located is Northport, New York. The Registered Nurse- Medical Surgical RN is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. The Med Surg RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care based on age specific components.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>The Staff Registered Nurse (Staff RN) provides care for a team of Veterans within the medical/surgical, rehabilitation and/or telemetry unit. Incumbent is responsible for recognizing and reporting physiological and/or psychological deviations such as symptoms of hemorrhage, shock, obstructed airway and/or anaphylaxis. The Staff RN must be proficient in post-operative care as well as pain management. Incumbent is responsible for maintaining up to date all mandatory training and attending required in-services as well as maintaining current BLS certification. The incumbent will possess effective communication skills and customer service practices. The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to medical and surgical patients with the emphasis on disease management and wellness. The area requires the nurse to provide treatment utilizing nursing processes, according to the written procedures and policies of the med/surg rehabilitation and/or telemetry unit. Specific job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 1. Adhere and promote desired clinical outcomes for patients in accordance with National guidelines. 2. Perform acute and chronic nursing care. 3. Provide, direct, and supervise the delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse Veteran population. 4. Promote and maintain a positive, safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment. 5. Perform systematic assessments of patients and assure that data is collected, documented, and communicated. 6. Assess patient and family understanding of therapy regimen and conduct ongoing education for patients and their families regarding any therapy requirements. 7. Recognize subtle changes in patient's condition and responds timely, choosing the correct interventions. 8. Responsible for the implementation, administration, monitoring, and documentation of patient's response to prescribed treatment, including appropriate notification of adverse reactions to physician and hospital personnel. 9. Monitor the environment for potential and/or actual safety hazards. 10. Direct supervision of unlicensed staff. 11. Act as a patient advocate when patient self-determination is questioned. 12. Promote restorative patient care that incorporates the patient's desired outcomes 13. Provide a holistic nursing approach that addresses the disease process as well as the psychosocial elements. The Staff RN is also responsible and accountable for maintaining training required and may be assigned additional duties as area needs require.
