ABOUT THIS ROLE
<p>The Surgery Nurse Liaison is self-directed, assumes accountability for clinical nursing care and support, and ensures smooth patient flow in specialty-focused clinics. This role encompasses surgical scheduling, care coordination, and operational oversight from consultation through workup, procedure, and follow-up, while adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The nurse functions independently in nurse-driven clinics, assists physicians with nursing skills as needed.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>The Surgery Nurse Liaison is self-directed, assumes accountability for clinical nursing care and support, and ensures smooth patient flow in specialty-focused clinics. This role encompasses surgical scheduling, care coordination, and operational oversight from consultation through workup, procedure, and follow-up, while adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The nurse functions independently in nurse-driven clinics, assists physicians with nursing skills as needed, and provides cross-coverage for other surgical clinics. The Surgery Nurse Liaison serves as a critical communication bridge between veterans, their families, and the surgical team, physicians, and other interdisciplinary teams while ensuring a patient-centered experience that reduces anxiety and improves care coordination. The duties include but are not limited to: Oversee daily clinic activities to ensure smooth patient flow. Monitor adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for consistency and compliance. Identify delays, address patient-physician issues, and improve surgical department workflows. Communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and multidisciplinary teams. Ensure timely scheduling and resource allocation for surgeries. Monitor wait times and implement strategies to improve access. Collaborate with surgical specialties, Ambulatory Service Units {ASU), and inpatient units to streamline care. Effectively communicate with referral services for pre-procedural clearance and bed flow coordinator for inpatient care needs postoperatively. Help families navigate hospital facilities, access resources, and arrange transportation or home-care needs. Perform nursing tasks as needed (e.g., wound care, medication administration, patient education). Manage clinics where nurses lead patient care under established protocols. Serve as preceptor and Mentor and educate staff on new policies, procedures, and compliance requirements. Participate in audits, chart reviews, and collect satisfaction data for quality improvement.
