ABOUT THIS ROLE
<p>The Registered Nurse provides care and counseling of persons or in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems. Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>The ICU Nurse is a professional Registered Nurse (RN) who provides high quality, evidence based care for adult and geriatric Veteran patients who are critically ill and require comprehensive intensive care. The ICU RN provides care to Veterans who commonly present with multi-system, co-morbidities requiring a multitude of therapeutic modalities including continuous cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation, invasive hemodynamic management, ventilator support, and pharmacological interventions. Registered Nurses who work in the ICU provide a minimum of 51% inpatient critical care to the Veteran population. Registered Nurses who work in the ICU must currently possess and maintain ACLS and BLS certifications. The RN in the ICU functions as part of an interdisciplinary team and is accountable for direct care to a defined number of patients for his/her shift. The nurse functions at all times as a patient advocate and performs his/her cares and duties with the utmost integrity adhering to policies and procedures and following all protocols, guidelines and standards of practice (SOP). On a daily basis the nurse may be exposed to infected patients, contaminated materials, patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders and appropriate protocols must be followed. The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients and oversight of licensed vocational nurses/nursing assistants, as appropriate to the setting. The nurse will assist in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies and providing quality improvement and outcomes utilization consultation. Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others. Provides direct care for acutely/critically ill patients who are at high risk for actual or potential life-threatening health problems, regardless of the setting for nursing care. Provides high intensity care and vigilance, while refining assessment skills and blending in data obtained from a variety of invasive/noninvasive monitoring technology. Evaluates practice in an ongoing process, based on best evidence. Provides peers with informal constructive feedback for improvement. Fosters a safe and supportive environment conducive to the professional development of healthcare professionals. Contributes professional nursing perspective in discussions with the interdisciplinary team. Partners with others to effect change and produce optimal outcomes. Supports colleagues through knowledge sharing to provide safe, quality nursing care. Shares educational findings, experiences, and ideas with peers. Questions clinical practices for the purpose of providing evidence-based care. Participates in activities and strategies to sustain an evidence-based-practice culture. This nurse has experience with the situations in which they are ultimately expected to perform, integrating theoretical concepts, strong critical thinking skills, and exhibits a robust technically skilled practice. Preferred Experience: BSN or MSN 2 -5 years Adult Intensive Care Unit or Critical Care experience 1 year recent bedside Intensive Care Unit RN experience Certified Critical Care Nurse (CCRN) or other critical care certification(s) preferred Work Schedule: 1830-0700 , Night shift .
