<p>The Birmingham VA Medical Center operates a 139-bed tertiary care teaching hospital and is dedicated to providing the highest quality of patient care to Veterans in Alabama. The Medical Center provides comprehensive health care through primary care and tertiary care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, blind rehabilitation and is a recognized leader in palliative care and multiple sclerosis.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) serves as a member of the nursing team, caring for male and female veterans ranging in age from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over, incorporating pertinent physical, psychological, and social/cultural needs. The LPN provides specialized care to patients with a multiplicity of disease processes who require more complex treatments and who may be seriously ill. Duties include, however, not limited to: Provides personal care to patients and performs assigned treatments and procedures. Performs nursing procedures as appropriate to grade level, such as bladder catheterizations/irrigations, gastrostomy and naso-gastric tube feedings including instillation of medications via both tubes, oxygen therapy to patient using cannula or mask, tracheostomy care under supervision including suctioning, cleaning, and inner cannula change, complete ostomy care, application and/or removal of simple dressings, simple wound irrigations, and application and/or removal of braces, splints, slings, phlebotomy, and peripheral IV insertion. Maintains patients' skin integrity by following established policies. Complies with appropriate infection control policies and procedures. Maintains a safe and clean environment for patients and co-workers including keeping the patient's room, utility room, supply room, linen room, conference room, bathrooms, medication room, and nutrition kitchen in order. Provides safety and comfort for the patients, instructs patients in safety measures, applies and monitors restraining devices under the supervision of the registered nurse. Provides direct patient care. Assesses within the scope of an LPN's education and license, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components. Participates in patient and family education, self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. Considers all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences. Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Participates in actions that influence care outcomes by participating as a member of the interdisciplinary team. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, with rotating weekends and holidays, 5:00AM-1:30PM, 3:00PM - 11:30PM. 11:00PM- 7:00AM. Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA. Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Telework: Not Available. Virtual: This is not a virtual position. All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
