Duties include but not limited to: Obtains patients' histories from electronic records, patient interviews, dictated reports, and by communicating with referring clinicians. Prepares comprehensive interpretive reports of findings. Performs and interprets the outcomes of diagnostic imaging procedures including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computer tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), nuclear cardiology treadmill studies, mammography, and ultrasound. Reviews and transmits images and information using picture archiving and communications systems. Communicates examination results and diagnostic information to referring physicians, patients, and families. Evaluates medical information to determine patients' risk factors (such as allergies to contrast agents) and to make decisions regarding the appropriateness of procedures. Provides counseling to radiologic patients to explain the processes, risks, benefits, and alternative treatments. Confers with medical professionals regarding image-based diagnoses. Coordinates radiological services with other medical activities. Documents performance, interpretation, and outcomes of procedures performed. Establishes and enforces standards for protection of patients and staff. Develops and monitors procedures to ensure adequate quality control of images. Administers radiopaque substances by injection, orally, and as enemas to render internal structures and organs visible on x-ray films and fluoroscopic screens. Recognizes and treats complications during and after procedures including blood pressure problems, pain, oversedation, and bleeding. Participates in continuing education activities to maintain and develop expertise. Participates in quality improvement activities including discussions of areas where risk of error is high. Implements protocols in areas such as drugs, resuscitation, emergencies, power failures, and infection control. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm Additional Requirement: American Board of Radiology (ABR) certification or equivalent.</p><h3>Requirements</h3>U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Complete all application requirements detailed in the "Required Documents" section of this announcement.<h3>Education</h3>Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated. NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
