ABOUT THIS ROLE
<p>This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>The provider will manage scheduled and unscheduled patients in the outpatient clinic setting. The modalities will be in-person, video, or in some instance from a designated telework location, and occasionally phone visits. We are affiliated with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Vagelos School of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia. The facility also has its own internal medicine residency program. Scope of Assigned Duties: Clinical Functions: The primary care physician physician will provide direct patient care full time and work as a member of an expanded healthcare team (PACT). Primary care physician works with this team to oversee and coordinate medical care for a population of Veterans in a group practice setting. A primary care provider in the outpatient setting is assigned a panel of patients. The target panel size is based on various factors but may be exceeded depending on needs of the service. Major Duties of this position may include, but are not limited to: Provide outpatient care for primary care patients, including routine scheduled visits and urgent visits Prescribe medications within defined scope of practice Order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms Review needs, and order health promotion and disease prevention measures Initiate and respond to consultations, special tests, and studies Provide education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs. Participate in team communication with the PACT MSA, LPN and RN: Daily Team Huddles Completion of clinical reminders as medically appropriate. Quality of care should always meet professional standards. Timely documentation (notes and encounter forms) is necessary in all areas in accordance with facility policy. All administrative work should be completed in a timely fashion. All physicians will always work within their privileges, unless necessitated by an emergency. Additional Duties may include: Chart reviews Congressional, other suspense items VA Tort Claims Other duties as assigned Alternative or collateral duties may include: Management of a subsection of primary care patients, the subsection may be defined either by a disease status (e.g., spinal cord injury patients, Pain management etc.), or demographic status (Geriatric, Women Veterans, employees etc.) or may be an Academic PACT. Typically, these duties are designated at the time of joining but may be assigned in the course of employment in response to new initiatives. Serve as Float Primary Care Physicians who will cover for absences of PACT providers, and other duties under the primary care umbrella such as Employee Health, Traveling Veteran care, urgent care and others. This position may require intermittent travel to Community Based Outreach Clinics (CBOC). Supervising of or collaboration with primary care mid-level providers. Physicians are expected to provide clinical oversight and to participate in peer review of other primary care providers through periodic chart reviews. Supervising, educating and evaluating of internal medicine residents and medical students in the outpatient primary care setting. Providing surrogate coverage for absent primary care providers when needed, to include review of CPRS view alerts, paper correspondence and other aspects of patient care. Compressed schedule may be available based on facility need. Duties may include evening and weekend hours.</p><h3>Requirements</h3>U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Must be proficient in written and spoken English. Must pass pre-employment physical examination. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). You may be required to serve a probationary period. Complete all application requirements detailed in the "Required Documents" section of this announcement.<h3>Education</h3>Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated. NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
