Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center serves as the primary health care provider for more than 151,000 Veterans in southeast Texas. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston, TX. MEDVAMC is seeking an outstanding junior or higher-ranked stroke-certified neurologist to join the Neurology Care Line. Houston is a DNV-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center and has expanded its services significantly in the last few years. State-of-the-art stroke care is available, including 24/7 access to acute stroke treatment, advanced imaging techniques, thrombolysis, and thrombectomy. MEDVAMC supports stroke education through residency and fellowship programs associated with Baylor College of Medicine. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards. Assessing the needs and planning intervention for adult eligible patients and their families. 2. Facilitating the delivery of care as expected from a stroke subspecialist and a general Neurologist. 3. Performing initial histories and physical examinations 4. Ordering appropriate diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, CT scans, MRIs, PET scans, EEGs, EMGs and other electrodiagnostic tests. 5. Performing and supervising lumbar punctures as needed. 6. Performing specialty specific scales such as, MMSE/MOCA, NPI, GDS as appropriate. 7. Assisting individuals/families to achieve optimal levels of health through collaboration with medical and health care professionals. 8. Exercising medical decision-making and provides a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for a specific group of patients. 9. Exhibiting leadership in initiating changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from research and/or studies. 10. Involvement in direct patient care, patient and family teaching, staff education and multidisciplinary consultations and collaborations. 11. Participation in education of PA students, NPs, fellows, residents, and medical students. 12. Consistent demonstration of expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill multi-symptomatic patients. 13. Serving as a resource person for standards development in health care in quality improvement concerns. 14. Initiating and expediting requests for consultations and scheduling special tests and studies. 15. Providing education and counseling of patients and families in neurological conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs; and other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: To be discussed during the interview process; 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; May include extended hours and weekends when assigned weekend ward services.</p><h3>Requirements</h3>U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Must pass pre-employment physical examination. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). Complete all application requirements detailed in the "Required Documents" section of this announcement.<h3>Education</h3>Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated. NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
