<p>Seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Physician Assistant in the General Surgery/Surgical Oncology Department. Responsible for reporting patient care activities. Authorized to enter clinical orders of patients admitted to the Operative Care Line for care. Responsible for all orders, progress notes, consultation requests, discharge summaries, reports of histories and physical examinations. Assist in surgical procedures as first or second assistant when needed.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>The Michael E. DeBakey VAMC and the Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Surgery are currently seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Physician Assistant in General Surgery/Surgical Oncology Department at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center. As a medical professional, you will be responsible for reporting patient care activities in the medical record. As a Physician Assistant, you will be authorized to enter clinical orders in the medical records of patients admitted to the Operative Care Line for care. Responsible for all orders, progress notes, consultation requests, discharge summaries, reports of histories and physical examinations. Assist in surgical procedures as first or second assistant when needed. Perform all procedures in the clinic including but not limited to management of acute and chronic health problems; ordering, interpreting and performing interventions based on diagnostic studies including radiology and laboratory studies; prescribing pharmacologic agents (per VHA Directive 2008-049; MCP 118CPO-002; VHA Directive 10-95-020 -General Guidelines for Establishing Medication Prescribing Authority for Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Pharmacy Specialists, and Physician Assistants): providing consultation; admitting and discharging of patients, conducting patient rounds or providing Medical Officer of the Day responsibilities. The Michael E. DeBakey VAMC is the most complex level 1A facility within the VA system and has the most complex surgical service offering state of the art surgical technologies. MEDVAMC serves as the acute tertiary care referral center for a large veteran population in East Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Mississippi. Major duties for the Physician Assistant - Surgery include, but are not limited to: Conducting history and physical examinations, assessment, diagnosis and management of acute and chronic health problems Ordering, interpreting and performing interventions based on diagnostic studies including radiology and laboratory studies Prescribing pharmacologic agents (per VHA Directive 2008-049; MCP 118CPO-002; VHA Directive 10-95-020 -General Guidelines for Establishing Medication Prescribing Authority for Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Pharmacy Specialists, and Physician Assistants) Providing consultation Admitting and discharging of patients, conducting patient rounds or providing Medical Officer of the Day responsibilities Prescribe medications Clinical research, clinical instruction to health care students, administrative duties and professional or community related activities. First assist in the OR as needed Debridement of wounds Minor surgical procedures Minor procedures such as excision of soft tissue, lumps, hemorrhoids, banding, etc Administration of local anesthesia Incision and drainage of wounds Proctoscopies Maintain the operating room schedule and daily posting in consultation with the chief resident and the staff. Facilitate communication scheduling and work up with the pre-op medicine and pre-operative clinic. Maintain continuity of care of the surgical oncology patient VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.
