ABOUT THIS ROLE
<p>The primary function of the Pharmacy Supervisor - Outpatient is to direct and coordinate the daily workflow and operational activities within the Outpatient Pharmacy settings located within the Phoenix VA Health Care System (PVAHCS), as well as to support productivity of all areas as a working pharmacist. The Outpatient Pharmacy Supervisor has full responsibility for the operation of all Outpatient Pharmacy services for patients according to VHA and PVAHCS policies and procedures.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>30 Day Hiring Model The Department of Veterans Affairs is implementing a streamlined 30-Day Hiring Model designed to accelerate hiring while maintaining the highest standards of merit-based selection. This improved process reduces traditional hiring timelines by integrating early coordination, faster assessments, and efficient pre-employment actions. Applicants can expect a more transparent, predictable, and efficient hiring journey from announcement to entry on duty. What Applicants Can Expect: Expedited Candidate Review Once the announcement closes, Human Resources will quickly review applications, issue certificates of eligible candidates the day after the announcement closes and refer applicants for hiring manager consideration. Quick Interviews & References HR may arrange interviews and will request references within 3-5 days after being referred to the hiring manager. Streamlined Pre-Employment Requirements: Following a tentative offer, applicants should be prepared to complete required steps, such as fingerprinting and background check, credentialing, and medical examination within 3 days of the offer. Clear and Timely Communication: Applicants will receive clear communication at key milestones, including referral, tentative offer, and onboarding instructions. After meeting pre-employment requirements, candidates will receive a final job offer and start date. Onboarding tasks may continue after starting, with HR ensuring timely completion for a smooth transition into VA service. If selected, applicants should be prepared to come onboard within 30 days of the announcement closing. Major duties include but are not limited to: ADMINISTRATIVE AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides first-line coordination and oversight for Outpatient Pharmacy pharmacist and technician work activities, including staff leave and scheduling, staff work assignments, order verification processes, veteran and non-veteran telephone customer services, and regulatory compliance regarding medication control and security. Monitors and supports Outpatient pharmacy compliance with existing regulatory rules, laws, and standards. Ensures section compliance with all Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals, DEA, FDA, ASHP and OIG regulations and standards. Interviews employment candidates, makes selection recommendations, conducts performance evaluations, recommends appointments, special advances in addition to a full range of personnel actions such as promotions, placements, counseling, disciplinary actions, ratings, etc. Works with Human Resources to author and deliver any approved actions. Submits required reports, action items and suspense items in a timely manner. Provides the Chief of Pharmacy and Pharmacy Management team reported information on department performance. OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT I COMMUNICATION Conducts routine huddle-type communications to ensure staff awareness of daily scheduling and work requirements. Conducts staff meetings at least monthly and submits minutes via e-mail to all direct pharmacists and technician team members and pharmacy administration. Ensures that Outpatient Staff members understand how to report actual and/or potential medication errors and adverse events that can be used to promote quality improvement initiatives promoting patient safety. Develops, establishes, implements, and maintains written policies, and standard operating procedures defining operational requirements and makes them readily available for staff review. Ensures that all assigned subordinate personnel using drug dispensing and storage automation are trained on use of equipment prior to being granted access codes and passwords. TRAINING/ EDUCATION: Coordinates the training of all pharmacists and technicians within assigned area. Completes required competency in assigned specialized areas (e.g., controlled substance dispensing, medical center mandatory training, etc.). Ensures timely completion of all position pre-requisites and requirement established by PVAHCS, VISN 22 and VHA (e.g., documentation of licensure, education hours and mandatory training.
