ABOUT THIS ROLE
<p>The Assistant Nurse Manager supports the Nurse Manager in leading polytrauma and stroke rehabilitation programs, overseeing daily unit operations, supervising and scheduling staff, and coordinating evidence-based, interdisciplinary care for complex patients while promoting a safe, high-reliability, patient-centered environment and staff development.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Provides specialized nursing care for Veterans in the Polytrauma Comprehensive Rehabilitation, Stroke Specialty, and Polytrauma Transitional Rehabilitation Programs with complex neurological, medical, surgical, and post-traumatic needs. Coordinates and implements patient care using the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation), emphasizing education, self-management, and customer satisfaction across the continuum of care. Leads and organizes delivery of care for the unit, ensuring continuity, safety, and accountability in alignment with ANA Standards of Nursing Practice, High Reliability Organization principles, and VA ICARE values. Administers medications and performs procedures in accordance with VHA policy, CARF/TJC standards, and unit-specific protocols. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to plan, guide, and implement evidence-based rehabilitation care and to address environment of care, risk management, and nurse-sensitive quality indicators. Serves as Assistant Nurse Manager, functioning as first-line supervisor for assigned staff; directs work, develops schedules, approves/denies leave, provides counseling, recommends awards and discipline, and participates in hiring decisions. Assumes charge nurse responsibilities and provides direct patient care as needed on the Monday-Friday, 1530-0000 tour, including rotating weekends and holidays. Assists with managing the patient care environment, including budgeting, supplies, equipment, and staffing using electronic staffing systems, while fostering a healthy work environment. Leads and supports staff orientation, continuing education, and professional development; functions as a role model, educator, practitioner, and leader to build team competence and engagement. Collects, analyzes, and trends data to support performance improvement, zero-harm culture, and compliance with accreditation, regulatory, and Nursing Professional Practice Model requirements. Maintains competency through mandatory meetings, trainings, and participation in professional and unit-based initiatives that advance rehabilitative nursing practice. Complete all application requirements detailed in the "Required Documents" section of this announcement.<h3>Education</h3>Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD).
