<p>This position is in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Services to cover Ann Arbor Medical Center and rotate to the CBOC location such as Canton on a as needed basis. The Medical Technician serves as a phlebotomist in the clinical laboratory, bone marrow assistant for the clinician and specimen receiving and processing technician.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>This position routinely performs a variety of tasks such as specimen collection, processing, and testing. Initially he/she will be primarily involved in the support services of the laboratory. In this phase, basic clerical duties, accessing patient orders, specimen collection and processing for testing both within our laboratory and those referred to other laboratories will be the focus. As the employee gains experience and training, he/she will progress into the testing arena beginning with basic test systems (classified as waived or moderate complexity by CLIA standards). With additional experience and training, the employee will be assigned to a larger variety of moderately complex test systems. For each test system, the employee will be responsible for understanding not only how to perform the test, but also how to properly maintain the instrument, assure quality control is acceptable prior to reporting patient results, identifying potential interfering factors and reviewing patient results for acceptability and to identify significant/critical results requiring follow up.The incumbent serves as a Medical Technician (Phlebotomist) in the Laboratory Section of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Department and performing the duties at the Full Performance Level. The incumbent is responsible for performing multiple duties in accessioning, specimen processing, reference laboratory specimen processing, clerical functions, patient testing, and patient phlebotomy as necessary. Each of these functions is a percentage of his/her total time on duty.1. KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS: Ability to identify adverse reactions to venipuncture procedures. Possible adverse reactions include, but are not limited to the following: dizziness, nausea, and hematomas. Aware of proper procedures to be followed in case of incidents of fainting and convulsions. The incumbents will need to utilize skills in venipuncture techniques, which requires specialized training and/or education. Knowledge of expected normal and abnormal results of tests performed. Knowledge of and ability to use various types of venipuncture equipment. Knowledge of test names, synonyms, and related tests and panels. Ability to collect specimens properly labeled for testing. Knowledge of universal precautions. Knowledge of protocols that ensure safety during blood drawing procedures. Completes the required Hazardous Materials Training Certification-done every 2 years. An understanding of the aging process and the ability to build a good rapport with both the old and young patients seen at our facility. Ability to locate and utilize sources and references.
