ABOUT THIS ROLE
<p>The incumbent serves in the Specimen Collection/Processing/Send-out Section of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The position is that of a Medical Technician assigned to provide phlebotomy support for both inpatients and outpatients at the VA Central CA HealthCare System, Fresno, CA.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>*THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION* The incumbent will perform point-of-care testing, phlebotomy, accession specimens, and perform other procedures necessary to ensure appropriate specimen receipt, handling, and processing to ensure accurate, reliable laboratory results. Performs routine venipuncture specimen collections from inpatients, outpatients, and ambulatory inpatients. Proficiently collect these blood samples with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or required re-sticks, and ensure that samples are submitted to the clinical laboratory with the least possible delay. Receives and sort specimens, check request slips for proper information, log in specimens, and deliver specimens to various laboratory sections. Prepares samples for testing in the various clinical laboratory sections, such as labeling, centrifugation, decanting, aliquoting, etc. Performs distribution, storage and delivery of supplies and other materials used for the purpose of phlebotomy services. Cleans and restocks the blood collection room and areas where trays and equipment are stored. Receives phlebotomy request utilizing both manual and computerized logging methods. Collects of additional samples as required for the purpose of performing additional requested testing. Work Schedule: Shifts Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm., 10:00am - 6:30pm. Employees are required to rotate weekends and holidays. Work schedules are subject to change based on operational needs. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959 Physical Requirements: Physical demands may involve minimal lifting, standing, foot travel, bending, or sitting. The incumbent must have the digital dexterity and adequate vision to perform safe venipuncture procedures. Lifting will not exceed a weight of 10 pounds. The incumbent must fully utilize all safety practice and equipment provided by the medical center, and in compliance with local and accrediting agency requirements.
