ABOUT THIS ROLE
<p>This Medical Technician (Phlebotomist) position is in Pathology and Laboratory services at the Maine VA Healthcare System, located at the Augusta, ME location.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>The incumbent functions primarily in the area of Phlebotomy for the Clinical Pathology Laboratories at any VISN 1 VA Medical Center. The incumbent carries out duties in phlebotomy and specimen processing and responds to assigned Supervisors. S/he performs work in a clinical laboratory providing a range of blood drawing procedures, waived tests including finger-stick based testing, and other minor test as assigned. Consistently adheres to safety, infection control and universal precautions at all times, including before, during and after drawing blood. Such precautions include but are not limited to site preparation, removing tourniquets, wearing gloves, and following all isolation procedures while drawing patients. Builds manifests for Send Out testing and gathers, aliquots, labels, and packages specimens for courier pickup. The major duties of the job include, but are not limited to: Performs standard diagnostic tests or procedures such as venipuncture and finger stick to collect blood specimens according to written protocols or as directed by the physician or other professional staff. Adheres to safety, infection control, and universal precautions always while drawing blood. Enters all requests into the hospital computer system using multiple formats. Builds manifests for Send Out testing and gathers, aliquots, labels, and packages specimens for courier pickup. Performs all aspects of sample storage, packaging, and other requirements regarding the shipment of diagnostic specimens and infectious substances adhering to Federal DOT (Department of Transportation) and IATA (International Air Transport Association) Regulations. Functions as a resource person and troubleshooter forward and clinic personnel in executing VISTA order entry and results options. Maintains computer files and manually printed order entry forms.
