Medical Technician (Blood Banking)

<p>This position is located in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the at VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System - Toledo VA Clinic in Toledo, OH. The Medical Technician (Blood Banking) primarily serves as a phlebotomist in the clinical laboratory and secondly as a Specimen Processor for specimens run at the TCBOC and Send Out testing.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>*THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION* DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. The Medical Technician is responsible for ensuring accurate and respectful patient care during specimen collection and processing. Key duties include verifying patient identity, using proper collection techniques, accurately labeling specimens, and treating patients with professionalism and care. The role also involves specimen processing, including centrifuging and aliquoting blood and urine samples, while ensuring proper handling and storage of specimens. Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to: Performing venipuncture procedures in clinic and outpatient settings, including collecting blood specimens from patients with varying medical conditions using appropriate collection techniques Verifying patient identity and specimen information by following established identification procedures to ensure accurate specimen collection, labeling, and laboratory processing Providing patient-centered care by communicating professionally, establishing rapport, and accommodating the unique needs of adult, geriatric, and disabled patients Monitoring patients during specimen collection and responding appropriately to adverse reactions such as dizziness, nausea, fainting, hematomas, or other complications Applying sterile techniques and infection control practices when collecting, handling, and transporting specimens while adhering to universal precautions and laboratory safety requirements Receiving, processing, and preparing blood and urine specimens for testing while ensuring specimen integrity, proper storage, and compliance with laboratory procedures Reviewing specimen requirements and laboratory documentation using laboratory information systems and reference resources to ensure proper specimen preparation and submission Maintaining laboratory and phlebotomy supplies by monitoring inventory levels and ensuring collection and processing materials are available for daily operations Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment by following established housekeeping, infection prevention, and workplace safety procedures Responding to inquiries regarding specimen collection services and providing accurate information to patients, healthcare providers, and laboratory personnel Training and assisting new employees by demonstrating proper specimen collection, processing, safety practices, and laboratory procedures as assigned Participating in required training and professional development activities to maintain competency and remain current with laboratory policies and procedures Performing other related duties as assigned to support laboratory operations, patient care activities, and organizational goals Work Schedule: Monday to Friday: 08:30 a.m. to 05:00 p.m. Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Approved</p><h3>Requirements</h3>You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job To be considered for this position, you must complete all required steps in the process. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959 Physical Requirements: The work requires lifting of greater than 20 lbs., pushing of greater than 100 lbs., long periods of standing, repeated bending and walking long distances. Manual dexterity is also required to perform the duties of the Phlebotomy/Medical Technician.
