Hematology/Oncology Physician

Medical Center, part of the VA Capitol Health Care Network (VISN 5), offers a comprehensive range of services, including internal medicine, ambulatory surgery, audiology and speech pathology, dental, nursing home, nutrition, podiatry, prosthetics, women's health, mental health and rehabilitation medicine.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>This position will be in the Medical service and will report directly to the Medical Sub-specialty NOS Supervisor, who in turn will report to the Chief of Medicine. The Hematology/Oncology Physician shall provide care at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. All labor and services shall be provided including management, supervision, teaching, consultations and reports. Performance shall be according to the requirements contained in this functional statement and professional standards of The Joint Commission. Physician's clinical activity shall be a function of the VAMC Executive Committee of the Medical Staff clinical privileging process. Provides direct hands-on patient care including evaluation and treatment of the hematology/oncology patients, determination whether patients need to be admitted to the hospital or managed in the outpatient setting, and management of chronic disease. Comprehensive initial medical/psychosocial history and physical examination. Order appropriate diagnostic tests and work-up. Review and interpret diagnostic tests and take appropriate action. Formulate and record diagnostic impressions. Refer patients with appropriate consultations both within the VA and in the community. Provide clinical guidance to patients, families and other heath care providers over the phone, secure messaging or through the mail to coordinate health care, educate and give advice. Ensure accurate documentation of medical assessments, interactions and observations. Responsible for supervising and teaching medical residents and students. May be required to oversee mid-level practitioners, such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants. Enter orders into CPRS for medications, consults, testing etc. Establishes inter-personal and intra-departmental relationships to enhance optimal patient care. Demonstrates competent and effective oral and written communication and provides appropriate patient/family member teaching and education. Maintains familiarity and compliance with hospital infection prevention policies and procedures, ensuring the use of antiseptic methods of all in-clinic procedures. Complete all application requirements detailed in the "Required Documents" section of this announcement.<h3>Education</h3>Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.] NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
