ABOUT THIS ROLE
<p>The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) performs digital radiography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) of the head, neck spine, chest and body. These exams are performed with and without use of contrast materials. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies so that proper diagnosis and treatment may be initiated.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties include, but are not limited to: Demonstrates the ability to work independently as an MRI Technologist. Performs a wide variety of MRI/MRA exams to include complex visualization of vessels and organs by utilizing 3D technology. Maintains flexibility to allow for emergency cases. This requires the prioritization of scheduled patients as well as the ability to accommodate the extreme emergency patient who may need immediate emergency surgery, etc. Confers with radiologist to determine requirements of non-standard exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness of scans, etc., to produce and satisfy requirements of MRI scanning. Schedules patients for examinations. Advises radiologists or referring physicians of examination results. Notifies them of scans requiring their immediate attention. Works with the radiologist as a member of the radiographic team. Must assist and anticipate the needs of the radiologists and the performance of the exam. Must be continuously on the alert for the patient's condition (the alertness of the individual is essential to prevent contamination, recognize patient reactions, anticipate technique factor difficulties, etc.) Prepares contrast materials that are used in MRI and MRA exams. Improper use or administration of contrast materials runs the risk of patient mortality and, therefore, it is essential that a thorough understanding of the contrast material usage is possessed by those who prepare it. In addition, it must be continuously alerted to the patient's condition and other disorders. Reactions on the part of the patient require immediate attention so that harm does not come to the patient. Is certified to insert IV needles for administration of contrast material when necessary. Maintains continuing education requirements in order to maintain their professional license. Practices MR safety in order to eliminate non-MR compatible patients, staff and visitors from entering the MRI suite. This is achieved by the use of extensive professional training, ferrous wand and departmental policies and procedures. The incumbent must be aware of and practice MRI safety policies and procedures of the medical center and participate in quality assurance activities as directed. Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. This includes the maintenance of patient logbooks, registration and editing of patient exams in the computerized information system, copying of images (to CD or film), logging patients on the HIS-RIS work list or routing exams to different locations. Assures that MRI patients are screened in advance for any contraindicating conditions per Imaging Service policy. Responsible for explaining exams to patients so that patients understand what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, are possible. Performs IV therapy and blood collection for a handheld blood analysis, called i-STAT, on patients being administered IV contrast with his or her MRI examination. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm or 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. Subject to change based on the needs of the facility. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
