ABOUT THIS ROLE
<p>The Advanced Practice Nurse for the outpatient Pulmonary Team at the Durham VA Medical Center is fully qualified, licensed, and nationally certified to function in both a clinical and administrative role in accordance with the guidelines and policies of the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center.</p><h3>Major Duties</h3><p>Specific duties include but are not limited to: Clinical: Manages outpatients in the Pulmonary Service in accordance with applicable medical practice guidelines and within the incumbent's authorized scope of practice. Conducts comprehensive and problem-focused histories and physical examinations, orders and interprets diagnostic studies, establishes diagnoses, and develops and implements treatment plans, including the prescribing of medications consistent with prescriptive authority. Participates as a key member of the patient care team to formulate treatment plans and monitor patient progress. Utilizes and promotes approved standards of care, procedures, methods, techniques, safety precautions, and protocols in their application to patients. Collaborates with other medical center health care resources to ensure continuity of care. Keeps abreast of the latest trends, skills, procedures, equipment, and protocols relevant to the care of pulmonary patients. Facilitates the care of patients as well as their entry and exit from various health care systems by establishing and maintaining liaison with a variety of medical specialists and associated staff. Works with the Duke Fellowship Program and Duke Fellows on outpatient clinics, scheduling, and inbox monitoring. Administrative/Education/Research: Promotes and participates in the delivery of patient and family health care education. Coordinates the administrative functioning of the Pulmonary Outpatient Service as directed by the Section Chief. Attends conferences and committee meetings as assigned. Participates in, directs, and provides opportunities for staff development through in service education. Facilitates responses and actions to patient inquiries regarding care and treatment received. Assumes self-development responsibilities and maintains current knowledge of trends in the management of pulmonary patients. Participates in clinical research programs when appropriate. 8. Performs other administrative, educational, and/or research duties as assigned.
